Benijo Beach
Information
Playa de Benijo is a spectacular beach located in a remote area, offering breathtaking views and a wild, unspoiled environment. Known for its black sand and powerful waves, this beach is highly recommended for photography and enjoying stunning sunsets.
However, the access to the beach has been affected by landslides, which means that visitors must often admire its beauty from nearby viewpoints. The stairs leading down to the beach can be steep and challenging, but they provide a rewarding experience once at the bottom. This beach is popular among those who enjoy a tranquil and less crowded atmosphere, although parking can be difficult, especially on weekends.
Despite the risks associated with swimming due to strong currents, many suggest it’s still a great spot for a peaceful day by the ocean. The natural beauty of Playa de Benijo is well worth the journey, making it a must-visit on any trip to Tenerife.

Fantastic experience: The beach looks amazing but unfortunately today the staircase that leads to the beach is closed off with barriers. It's worth stopping anyway to admire the view from the path. As for the beach, you can stop at the previous one that Maps still calls Playa de Benijo :)
Fantastic experience: The beach is a wonder, but you have to settle for seeing it from the viewpoints of Benijo since access is prohibited due to landslides. (22-Aug-24) and it should remain like this all summer based on what the locals have told us.
Positive experience: Temporarily closed since early July due to collapses.
Positive experience: Beautiful beach and quite accessible. The only downside is the parking. Cars park on the sides of the road, but it's hard to find a spot.
Fantastic experience: A nice and very beautiful beach; if you can't find a spot, you can park in paid parking lots managed by two gentlemen, costing you 2 euros for the whole day. The descent to the beach is a bit tough.

Fantastic experience: A black volcanic sand beach accessed by some stairs. The beach itself does not have much sand as it has a lot of rocky areas, but it is quite beautiful and popular. On weekends, it is difficult to find parking.
Fantastic experience: Secluded volcanic beach with big waves.

Fantastic experience: Super cool beach with incredible sand. Be careful with the currents. Rough sea
Fantastic experience: Stunning place, dark sandy beach, quite windy of course ('is a surfing spot')! Life guards and Red Cross are there present all day long
Fantastic experience: It's one of those magical places worth knowing. It's a bit remote, and to get there you have to go down a few stairs, but it's a fantastic black sand beach. At low tide, you can walk to some of the rocks, and the ground turns into a perfect mirror for taking spectacular photos. Another plus is the beautiful sunsets. The downside is the climb back, which is a bit tiring.
Positive experience: With the last storm, a large part of the beach was lost, now it is made up of large stones.
Fantastic experience: Best beach on the Tenerife. Lot of space and less people. Black sand and big waves

Fantastic experience: Magnificent beach and very good restaurant
Fantastic experience: Very beautiful and quiet beach in the green part of the island! It does take a little while to drive down all the hairpin turns, but the drive is definitely worth it. The way there is unique in itself. Access to the beach is possible from the back of the restaurant and has been newly developed. Surfing is also possible here, and you can rent boards one place before.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful beach and a top view from the restaurant - rarely eaten with such a good panorama. Definitely do it - the journey is worth it!
Fantastic experience: We had a nice seafood lunch at one of the restaurants up top and then walked down with our two little kids (2 and 5) and spent 3 hours in this lovely beach! The swell was big but it’s shallow and we could play safely in the water. Bring a cooler box with beer as there is no kiosk.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach with fine black sand. Beautiful drive through the mountains to get there. Best to drive up the hill and park for free behind restaurant El Frontón. You need to enter by foot passing the restaurant El Mirador. Approx. 5-10 Min. steap walk to the beach. No showers and no drinks/food to buy. Almost no shadow. Water can become very dangerous, especially when red flag is shown.

Positive experience: Schöner schwarzer Sandstrand. Tolle Wellen. Keine Strandwacht.
Positive experience: Muy bonita. Gracias a Dios escape.

Fantastic experience: Beautiful landscape
Positive experience: Bit crowded, but beautiful place
Fantastic experience: I have known the beach since the late 1970s, when you could spend the whole day there without seeing anyone. After a significant nudist phase, today, although that practice is tolerated, it is more textile than anything else. The opening of the road, the bars, and the improvement of the path have turned the beach into a dirty place invaded by people who are not respectful of the environment, seriously threatening its ecological balance. Camping, although currently less frequent, also contributed to filling the beach with trash. In short, the beach I consider the best in Tenerife is in serious danger.
Fantastic experience: What a beautiful and wild gem. Easily reachable by stairs. Be careful with the waves, since the beach is rocky at some places and if taken down by a wave you can hit rocks.
Fantastic experience: After looking at what days were best to go north to avoid wind and big waves, we were lucky to choose this beach and spent the day there. The access is good via a recently installed staircase. The downside is that when the tide rises, the beach gets almost sandless with the water, especially at the end of the beach. If you want to spend the day without worrying about the tides, it's best to go towards the end and look behind the rocks for some pieces of sand to lay your towels on. Although the beach is naturist, there are many people who do not take off their bathing suits and others come just to see and take photos, especially at the beginning of the beach, which can be a bit uncomfortable. Therefore, if you prefer to be in a quiet place, the best part is from the center of the beach to the end and to look behind the rocks for one of the several sandy spots. The only drawback is for swimming, but with flip-flops, you can quickly step on the larger stones and reach the sand, from there to the water you can go barefoot comfortably.

Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach, worth the drive and walk down to it. I think the locals like to come here. I suggest coming around 10 am to get a spot. It's not too crowded but you have a higher chance of getting some shade later in the day. I don't know if surfing is permitted but the waves are awesome.
Fantastic experience: Great black beach. Parking was awkward, so get here early. Best to avoid a couple of hours either side of high tide as the beach is under water! Great for messing about in the surf if you are a good swimmer. Well worth the drive.
Fantastic experience: Big waves for surfers, beach with stones and the way to get there is a paradise for motorcycle drivers

Fantastic experience: One of the best beaches in the north. Recommendation: eat at Casa Paca. It is not a beach to enjoy snorkeling or swimming (depending on the tide, they only recommend swimming up to the knees) but it is a beautiful beach to watch the sunset.

Fantastic experience: Beautiful. Many waves but very fun.
Fantastic experience: Picturesque beach, perfect water and fun waves with board and without.
Me gustø mucho.

Benijo Beach: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Closed due to high chances of landslides
Fantastic experience: Beautiful. Many waves but very fun.
Fantastic experience: The beach is closed
Fantastic experience: Benijo Beach is one of those unique corners of Tenerife that leaves you speechless. It is a pristine beach surrounded by stunning cliffs and rock formations that emerge from the sea, giving it a wild and natural atmosphere. Perfect for nature lovers and photographers, especially at sunset when the sky is bathed in incredible colors and the landscape becomes magical.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful landscape
Fantastic experience: My favorite beach on the island. I love going in summer because the sun sets at a latitude sufficient to see the sunset, and it is a true wonder to enjoy that natural spectacle!
Fantastic experience: A beautiful beach with a lovely environment.
Fantastic experience: Spectacular place
Fantastic experience: With low tide, it was the most beautiful beach in Tenerife for me! THE PHOTOS DO NOT DO ITS BEAUTY JUSTICE!
Fantastic experience: The beach looks amazing but unfortunately today the staircase that leads to the beach is closed off with barriers. It's worth stopping anyway to admire the view from the path. As for the beach, you can stop at the previous one that Maps still calls Playa de Benijo :)

Fantastic experience: Stunning place, dark sandy beach, quite windy of course ('is a surfing spot')! Life guards and Red Cross are there present all day long
Positive experience: Wonderful view on the Benijo Beach but unfortunately we came there for sunset time and the small street to go to the beach is closed for landslides and I do not think it will be open for a long time since the iron fences are quite strongly made. Anyway, the 40 minutes road from Las Teresitas was worth it! A real magic time and panorama! ❤️
Negative experience: It's a pity, the beach is closed due to the risk of landslides...
Negative experience: Closed due to the risk of landslides
Positive experience: Temporarily closed since early July due to collapses.
Fantastic experience: Magnificent place ❤️
Negative experience: The beach is closed by the local police due to landslides :(
Positive experience: Beach is closed now, because of landslides. Doesn't seem to be opened soon.
Positive experience: Impressive beach with many waves breaking against the numerous rocks offshore.
Fantastic experience: The most beautiful beach I have seen in Tenerife. Maybe because I like black sand ❤️❤️
Negative experience: The beach is closed due to landslides
Fantastic experience: This beach is wonderful, you have to go to the beach.
Fantastic experience: A very beautiful view!
Fantastic experience: Perhaps the most beautiful beach on the island. Wild and untamed. Rocks, rough sea, few people, dark sand. Warm and no wind, despite the lack of sun around 26 degrees, which is rare. It is beautiful. A gem.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful views. The beach looks dangerous but lifeguards are on watch.
Positive experience: Beautiful beach and quite accessible. The only downside is the parking. Cars park on the sides of the road, but it's hard to find a spot.
Positive experience: Bit crowded, but beautiful place
Positive experience: A quiet beach and not too crowded because of how hidden it is.
Fantastic experience: Something fabulous! It is worth going down!
Fantastic experience: A nice and very beautiful beach; if you can't find a spot, you can park in paid parking lots managed by two gentlemen, costing you 2 euros for the whole day. The descent to the beach is a bit tough.
Fantastic experience: Without a doubt, my favorite beach of those I visited during this trip. The access is via a path with steps and wooden planks, which makes it very easy to reach. It's a wild beach, with no services of any kind. We saw a spectacular sunset and swam. There were very few people.
Fantastic experience: one of the most beautiful beaches in Tenerife! A must-stop on my photographic trips
Fantastic experience: Black beach that still preserves its wild appearance. The minimum of services available, but that is precisely what makes it fascinating.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place. Every time I go to Tenerife, I like to go there to enjoy the tranquility.
Positive experience: With the last storm, a large part of the beach was lost, now it is made up of large stones.
Positive experience: Beautiful wild beach in the North of the Island. Complicated and long access. The car is left in a free parking lot above, and you have to access it via a pretty long path and stairs for almost 1km. The descent is pleasant, the problem is the ascent with a considerable slope, steepness, and many stairs. The beach usually has quite a bit of surf and high tide.
Fantastic experience: The drive through the serpentines is worth it to get there.
Fantastic experience: One of the most beautiful beaches on the island! A must-do, along with hiking.
Positive experience: The place is spectacular, the access by car is difficult and there is very little parking.
Fantastic experience: This beach is a movie experience. 100% recommended. It's worth everything just to get here.
Fantastic experience: It's nice to come back, peace.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful surroundings, unfortunately discovered by mass tourism
Negative experience: Unfortunately, we were not lucky enough to get down, even though we arrived on time, but there was no parking. About 15 or 20 cars can stop, which is very few since many more came here.
Fantastic experience: The beach is located at the foot of the mountains with a very steep cliff from which there is a beautiful viewpoint.
Fantastic experience: A beautiful beach. Very large waves and currents, you need to be very careful and stay by the shore. Difficult to park nearby.
Positive experience: Very beautiful, with a large stretch of beach and parking areas. Easy access.
Fantastic experience: Lovely place, the only one like it on the island!
Fantastic experience: Beautiful excursion destination.
Fantastic experience: Very wide and beautiful beaches accessible via trails. From here, there are also trails for very nice trekking that start or arrive.
Fantastic experience: Extensive black beach with amazing views of the Anaga mountains and the ocean, a place located off the beaten path, usually few tourists, nearby there are a few small equally atmospheric villages, a wonderful place to relax after trekking in the mountains, free street parking available right by the beach, I definitely recommend.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach, on the first day of 2024, despite the big waves, there were many eager to swim. Apparently, anyone who swims in the ocean on January 1st will have good luck all year long.
Positive experience: It has always been a nudist beach, and it will continue to be. I don't mind if there are textile people; since the 60s, people have been swimming nude, and I will personally continue that long tradition.
Fantastic experience: Best beach on the Tenerife. Lot of space and less people. Black sand and big waves
Fantastic experience: Very beautiful, but crowded.
Fantastic experience: They resemble Hawaii, breathtaking landscape, high cliffs in the middle of the sea, stunning waves. Absolutely the most fascinating place from a naturalistic point of view in Tenerife.
Fantastic experience: I recommend trekking Benijo-El Dragilo. The view of the ocean from the height of the clouds.
Fantastic experience: Very beautiful, quiet beach with a shower. Surf swimming possible. Don't underestimate the current!
Fantastic experience: Totally recommended 100% Black sand
Fantastic experience: One of the most beautiful beaches in the world! And you can even swim here at Christmas! Pleasantly warm!
Fantastic experience: I have known the beach since the late 1970s, when you could spend the whole day there without seeing anyone. After a significant nudist phase, today, although that practice is tolerated, it is more textile than anything else. Fantastic experience: What a beautiful and wild gem. Easily reachable by stairs. Be careful with the waves, since the beach is rocky at some places and if taken down by a wave you can hit rocks.
Fantastic experience: One of the most Instagrammable beaches on the island. The current is very dangerous, swimming is not recommended, but you can take beautiful photos without getting in the water. There is a parking problem, I had to leave the car above the beach on a dirt road.
Fantastic experience: Magnificent beach and very good restaurant
Fantastic experience: By far the most beautiful beach on the island
Fantastic experience: Amazing beautiful beach. Accessible by a staircase, though you have to walk a bit over the pebbles to reach the sand.
Fantastic experience: Nice waves, you can walk out really far. Few tourists. It's a bit secluded but still worth a visit.
Fantastic experience: A black volcanic sand beach accessed by some stairs. The beach itself does not have much sand as it has a lot of rocky areas, but it is quite beautiful and popular. On weekends, it is difficult to find parking.
Fantastic experience: After looking at what days were best to go north to avoid wind and big waves, we were lucky to choose this beach and spent the day there. Fantastic experience: Stunning wild
Fantastic experience: Picturesque beach, perfect water and fun waves with board and without.
Fantastic experience: My favorite beach on the whole island, amazing view and not too crowded, a lot of stairs to go down and up again but totally worth it.
Fantastic experience: Most beautiful beach with the most beautiful black sand on the island. Definitely recommend it. But go there by car and enjoy the landscape from Anaga.
Fantastic experience: Secluded volcanic beach with big waves.
Fantastic experience: It is a certain experience to come to this place, beautiful beach
Positive experience: Nice scenery, black sand beach. For me, not great for swimming, but some will find their happiness there.
Fantastic experience: For me, this is the most beautiful beach in Tenerife. Diverse coastline and black sand (although with some mixtures). Few people, although parking is still a problem. There are quite high stairs leading to the beach. Fantastic sunsets ;)
Fantastic experience: In love! Virgin beach, with unparalleled waters and space.
Fantastic experience: The Playa de Benijo and its surroundings are a wonder of nature. The drive there is a small challenge for inexperienced drivers. As compensation, there is a great hike in the nearby Anaga mountain range.
Fantastic experience: One of the most beautiful beaches on the island. A definite must visit.
Fantastic experience: Probably the most beautiful beach I have ever visited. Secluded from the hustle and bustle, with parking at the top of the cliff and long stairs to access it. Very clean and with stunning views.
Positive experience: super ..wild ..great beach ..a must see
Fantastic experience: Magnificent beach, 'access is earned. Both by car and by foot to the beach. But the view and the color of the beach are truly worth it, superb scenery, the clear water and the shining black sand.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place, The access to the beach is via stairs. Easily accessible without a stroller. Unfortunately, when we went there, the flag was red so we didn't have the opportunity to swim, and rightly so because the waves were violent.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful beach and a top view from the restaurant - rarely eaten with such a good panorama. Definitely do it - the journey is worth it!
Positive experience: Super beautiful beach! Definitely connect with Anaga. However, arrive in the morning or later in the evening, otherwise there are parking problems. The approach is via endless mountain roads. For those who know it from the Alps, no problem, otherwise difficult & exhausting. Alternative Playa Los Patos (Less drive, better parking options)
Fantastic experience: Spectacular beach! It is advisable to pay for the private parking next to the entrance to the stairs, it costs €2.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful and picturesque beach! One of the best we’ve been to in Tenerife. Waves are a bit rough, but you can lounge around in the shallow part. Sand is black and very fine. Parking is available near-by at 2 EUR for the day, not that much and there’s plenty of space.
Fantastic experience: The closest thing to Valhalla, in the wonderful land, a place to relax and see the beauty that Tenerife has.
Fantastic experience: One of the best beaches in the north. Recommendation: eat at Casa Paca. It is not a beach to enjoy snorkeling or swimming (depending on the tide, they only recommend swimming up to the knees) but it is a beautiful beach to watch the sunset.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach with stunning views, in an area which is far away from most more populated places. Great area for a hike and sunset!
Fantastic experience: One of the best beaches on the island. Amazing views and I felt like on Bali :-D also can be dangerous cuz of the big waves.
Positive experience: Nice, clean beach. There are some small cafes situated nearby. There is a bus connection between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Playa de Benijo. However, it takes about 1h to get there (as the bus takes a route through the mountains). If you are travel sick, take medication.
Fantastic experience: FABULOUS! This beach and those around are my favourite ones in Tenerife. They are all the more beautiful that they are difficult to access and potentially dangerous. Driving there is already a challenge (26 km from La Laguna, 1 hour needed) although there are far more trick roads on Tenerife (try Masca and Sauzal costa). This beach is covered in very fine black, shiny sand. The waves are strong, and many rocks are scattered at unknown depths. Because access takes quite some time and effort (many stairs) it is worth spending at least 1/2 day there.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful panorama from the top. Nice beach with strong waves. Strong current, beware! Not as clean as the nearby Playa Almáciga though. Do not stay under the cliff due to loose rocks! To access from Almáciga, walk along the road until you reach the parking lot and take steep stairs down. There is another very rocky path along the coast from Almáciga, but I don't recommend it (You can see it in my pictures) . Even when I had hiking shoes on, I had to choose each and every rock to step on to avoid injuries.
Fantastic experience: Best beach we’ve found in Tenerife. Perfect for the sunset. Very calm, not crowded & extremely beautiful ❤️
Fantastic experience: One of the best beaches in Tenerife…
