Big Beach
Information
Platja Gran is a beautiful beach located in Tossa de Mar, offering a delightful escape for families and beachgoers alike. Visitors appreciate its clear, turquoise waters that are great for swimming, though it's worth noting that the beach is often crowded, particularly in August, which can diminish the overall experience.
Here are some highlights and concerns shared by visitors:
- Positives: Crystal clear water ideal for swimming and snorkeling, stunning views of the medieval castle, and a quaint atmosphere that benefits from proximity to local restaurants and shops.
- Negatives: The beach is pebbly and the shore steepens quickly, which can make it uncomfortable to walk on without water shoes. Additionally, the presence of boats and tourist ferries occupying part of the beach limits space for relaxation.
- During peak season, the beach can get overly crowded, and some visitors have expressed concerns regarding litter and the presence of cigarette butts, which detracts from Platja Gran's natural allure.
Overall, while Platja Gran has its limitations, its natural beauty and amenities make it worth a visit.

Fantastic experience: charming place, the entrance to the beach is rocky. Parking near the beach is hard to find. It takes 15 minutes to get to the underground parking.
Negative experience: It is an easily accessible beach next to the promenade. Half of the beach is privatized. There is a sunbed area, another area for boat entry, and those who simply want to go to the beach are crowded together. It's hard to see the sea. It is filled with moored boats. If they want to use them, they should moor them at the Lloret de Mar marina.
Positive experience: Beautiful typical Costa Brava beach, fresh and deep, the sand is chunky with pebbles so it doesn't burn as much, it is usually crowded in summer but there is plenty of space, parking in the blue zone is a bit expensive and you have to go quite far to park for free and it can be hard to find, many restaurants and shops nearby.
Positive experience: as a beach it is one of the best on the Costa Brava, what is a shame, is that in less than 20 years we have been left without being able to lay down a towel less than a meter away, the gentleman with the deck chairs puts up a cordon of 30mx30m and closes it as if it were his, and then there is a parking lot for small boats (none of native fishing) that takes another 30m, it is a disgrace, moreover, people with dogs in the middle of August, I don't see it as normal, when they pee the children will play with a little smell,, anyway, a beach that if it continues like this will be the closest thing to Lloret or Barceloneta
Positive experience: Playa Grande de Tossa: ¬Cove located at the front of Tossa de Mar. Turquoise and crystal-clear water. Let's get to the important part: ¬Thick sand. ¬It has all the services including a lifeguard. ¬Located in front of the city wall of Tossa, which adds a lot of charm, the best views of the wall of Tossa. ¬I recommend being there by 10:00 or earlier to park well. ¬Access is very easy, there are beach bars, restaurants, and all kinds of services nearby. ¬Although it is very frequented by tourists, it remains a very family-friendly cove, but during the high season, it gets very crowded and loses the calm and peace it conveys.

Negative experience: It's nice around but it's made of small stones, it's tricky to walk on and for every meter you step in, you sink a meter. If you like walking on the beach and wading into the water, better go to the beaches of Barcelona and Tarragona. For diving and snorkeling, they are good beaches since the water is crystal clear.

Positive experience: The view it’s amazing close to many restaurants. But the beach has rocks instead of sand
Positive experience: Beauty is lost for now undes thousands of towels and sunbathers , owercrouded during this july, no place in water to enjoy the waves. Just like Barcelona baches. Absolute anonimity in crowd of strangers :) tourist season
Fantastic experience: Never have I set my eyes upon such a sight. Clear blue water lapping up upon golden shores. Do you like swimming? You will never see clearer water. Do you like sunning? You will be warmed to the soul when you’re done here. Have you ever wanted to snorkel along rainbow fish and dance with them underwater? It is here that you will have those dreams realized. You will come a visitor, you will leave with a part of your heart buried deep in the sand with a home here forever.
Fantastic experience: Breathtaking Beach with History and Heart Platja Gran is hands down one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Brava. The setting is absolutely magical — soft golden sand, crystal-clear waters, and the medieval castle of Tossa de Mar rising just above the shoreline. It feels like stepping into a postcard. The beach is clean, well-maintained, and perfect for both relaxing and swimming. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby, so it’s easy to grab a drink or some tapas without leaving the sea view behind. Families, couples, and solo travelers alike will find something to love here. The real charm is the blend of natural beauty and historical atmosphere. Watching the sunset over the castle walls is something you won’t forget. A must-visit if you’re anywhere near Costa Brava — peaceful, stunning, and unforgettable.
Positive experience: Good beach, but far too small for the crowds of August. VERY crowded! also due to ferries and small boats docking areas taking up a good 20% of the beach length where people cannot rest nor swim. The 'sand' is unconfortable = grit + dust: very hot in the high sunshine and hurts your feet. The shoreline is steep and the water goes deep quickly. The water is nice and clear but gets a little dirty in the afternoon with so many people.

Fantastic experience: Great Central Beach in Tossa de Mar This is one of my favorite beaches in Catalunya, it is a great beach, I have been here many times. There were very few people even if the beach is not that big it did not feel overcrowded. The water is fantastic, very blue,, this beach is not super equipped, but it does have a few restaurants & cafes around. Overall it is a great day out and a unique place to visit.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful promenade beside beach Beach is pebbles Deep sea close to beach Great bars and restaurants close by Ferry from beach takes you to other coastal towns

Fantastic experience: Very quiet and clean beach with various restaurants nearby and incredible views of the castle. I went to spend a few days in Lloret, which I don't recommend by the way, and we decided to spend the day here, and we were pleasantly surprised. A much more family-friendly tourism without so much craziness.

Fantastic experience: Beach with crystal clear waters. It is deep, great for swimming. Bring water shoes, the beach has gravel. Every half hour, tourist boats embark and disembark heading to nearby coves and tours along the Costa Brava. It fills up very quickly. There is a lifeguard service. There are beautiful views of the Medieval Castle.
Fantastic experience: Lovely place worth spending half day. So technically it would be a 4 for me but due to some specially moment I give it a 5. Something to share if you travel with kids: 1. The sand quality is not ideal at the beach and it hurts walking bare foot. So get proper shoes. 2. Sea water very clear and cold (I mean fresh). From shore walking about 3 meter range the water gets quite deep (I guess around 2 meter plus). If you swim with kids please be mindful of safety. 3. No jellyfish or shark (well maybe if you go further there would be. 4. Be careful not to swim near where cruise ship ashore for your own safety. 5. There is 1 public toilet but no shower. Quite inconvenient after a swim. 6. Devils hole at the castle attracts lots of Chinese girls who can spend long time taking picture. Mostly one pose for a long time but sitting on the wall and another blocking entrance the other end. It is very dangerous if sitting facing out. Other than that, lovely small place. 7. Two beaches with the small one beneath castle. Water seems dirty would recommend to swim in the bigger beach.

Negative experience: There are much better beaches in the area, plus there is like a film of oil floating on the surface of the water, probably due to the back and forth of motorboats right in the middle of the beach making constant trips for tourist cruises at sea, which I do recommend among other things.

Fantastic experience: Large beach made of coarse sand and pebbles. Crystal clear water with a steep drop-off. For those who love snorkeling, I recommend the area under the castle.
Fantastic experience: The beach is quite spacious, bring shoes for better comfort, the water looked amazing, although we didn't go in, the views were beautiful, very clear, and there were many people snorkeling. There are tourist boats on the same beach, but they are separated from the bathers.
Negative experience: It's nice around but it's made of small stones, it's tricky to walk on and for every meter you step in, you sink a meter. Positive experience: Excelente arenal, aguas cristalinas.

Fantastic experience: Preciosa playa.

Fantastic experience: We really liked it here. Water shoes make the bathing experience more enjoyable, as it is a fine to coarse pebble beach. Sunbeds and umbrellas are rented out, but there is enough space for personal equipment. Boat trips can be started here. Kayaking and SUP are offered on the beach to the left.

Fantastic experience: Platja Gran is the main beach of Tossa de Mar, right in front of the medieval old town walls absolutely stunning views while you swim or sunbathe!
Fantastic experience: Excellent beach in the Costa brava not too busy and a calm atmossphere
Positive experience: Beauty is lost for now undes thousands of towels and sunbathers , owercrouded during this july, no place in water to enjoy the waves. Just like Barcelona baches. Absolute anonimity in crowd of strangers :) tourist season
Positive experience: Crowded and too narrow walkways at the beach. Nice views when not too crowded over the bay and castle

Fantastic experience: The beach is rocky, but the view of the city walls makes it a charming experience.
Fantastic experience: If you're looking for a little getaway from Barcelona, this place is absolutely worth it! Just a quick 1-2 hour trip, and suddenly you're in a dreamy seaside town with crystal-clear waters and the most peaceful vibes. It's super easy to find a quiet beach to relax, soak up the sun, and just forget about everything for a while. Plus, the whole town is walkable, and there's so much Catalan history to explore along the way. Whether you're here for the beaches, the views, or just a break from the city, Tossa de Mar won't disappoint! ️♀️
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach and it was surprisingly breezy!
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach and it was surprisingly breezy!
Fantastic experience: Super beach, small cruise ships arrive here. Beautiful sea, views of the fortress. Just relax.
Negative experience: Like any beach, you have to be careful not to get ripped off, even for just one coffee.
Fantastic experience: A lovely place, with lots to do and a perfect place to spend your holidays with family or friends. The view of the sea, the waves, is so addictive. Finally, you can take a walk to the nearest castle to see an amazing view. There are lots of things to do. And certainly, you will spend a wonderful time.
Fantastic experience: Charming locality, beautiful beach with a view of the fortress
Positive experience: Coarser sand with small stones, but smooth and not unpleasant, just sinks a bit more. Quite crowded on weekends, but on weekdays, towards the end of the season, it's good, just those sunbed prices - better to bring a mat and your own towel.
Positive experience: Quiet and well-equipped beach, to be reached in the morning not too late. Free and popular beach, many families present. Polite people, free beach!
Fantastic experience: Visited here on a September evening. Was quite empty. Beautiful beach.
Positive experience: A spectacular beach, clean and with magnificent views. I don't give it five stars because of the overcrowding, and that many of the businesses are solely focused on tourists; fortunately, Tossa offers many alternatives that are not crowded and of high quality.
Positive experience: Mixed review about this beach. Very large beach with crystal clear water by the rocks and a magnificent view of the ramparts. The whole experience is 'tainted' by the noise and the smell of exhaust fumes from the back-and-forth boats that come to pick up tourists directly on the beach... Beware, the current can be surprising.
Positive experience: Typical beautiful beach
Positive experience: Rather good, the water is moderately clear but for children, they quickly lose footing. With small waves, it's pleasant. Many women sunbathe topless (related to the children).
Fantastic experience: Nice beach, warm and clean water. It gets deep quickly, so caution is advised. We took the trip with Fondo Cristal and it was worth it to also visit Cala Giverola. It's also worth visiting the wall.
Positive experience: The sand is 5 millimeters in size, there are a lot of people, and it was very difficult to get into the water. The water 20 meters from the shore is very clear, pleasant, but a bit cool. There were strong waves and a yellow flag. Near the kiosk, there are 3 benches where it's nice to sit and look at the sea. There are no sellers of all sorts of junk on the beach. There are no showers or changing rooms, and the toilets are quite far, located at the ends of the beach.
Fantastic experience: I fell in love with this town. ❤️
Fantastic experience: charming place, the entrance to the beach is rocky. Parking near the beach is hard to find. It takes 15 minutes to get to the underground parking.
Fantastic experience: Tossa is easily reachable by boat from Lloret and is a truly authentic Spanish town with a stunningly beautiful castle, a great day trip.
Negative experience: The bad rating is because the beach and the place are among the best there is, but it is disgusting to go there because of the smokers who think the beach is an ashtray. My 4-year-old son instead of playing with the sand picked up cigarette butts to clean the beach. Town Hall, ban smoking at the beach! It's a natural and family-friendly place, not an ashtray!
Positive experience: Pretty beach with a nice decor (the fortress). A bit noisy and the boats mooring nearby detract a bit from the experience. The water is clear and the part of the beach near the fortress is not too exposed to the wind.
Positive experience: Beautiful sandy beach next to the old town and fortifications. Beautiful view of the fortified city from the sea. Clear water.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach
Negative experience: It is an easily accessible beach next to the promenade. Half of the beach is privatized. There is a sunbed area, another area for boat entry, and those who simply want to go to the beach are crowded together. It's hard to see the sea. It is filled with moored boats. There are beautiful views of the Medieval Castle.
Fantastic experience: It is a large, very quiet sandy beach with crystal clear waters. Ideal for a stroll.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful and calm, water so clear, 5 stars
Fantastic experience: Large beach made of coarse sand and pebbles. Crystal clear water with a steep drop-off. For those who love snorkeling, I recommend the area under the castle.
Fantastic experience: A beautiful place and beach, worth coming here and strolling through the streets of the old town.
Negative experience: Wide beach but in my opinion and with all due respect, a bit overcrowded, with a very steep step and what they call 'coarse sand' for me are 'small stones'.
Fantastic experience: Clean beach
Fantastic experience: Wonderful wide beach with fine gravel, you can confidently walk without shoes to the water, gently sloping descent to the water, beautiful view of the old city walls ❤️
Positive experience: Beautiful gravel beach, you can easily find a spot to relax. There are restrooms nearby the castle if needed. I only regret the boats being a bit too numerous and the visible pollution (plastics, floating pieces, etc.).
Fantastic experience: Wonderful
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach
Positive experience: It is very overcrowded and there is a lot of boat traffic. The scenery is definitely worth it.
Positive experience: Of calm and crystal clear waters. Very family-friendly. Lots of local people.
Fantastic experience: Super clear water, clean beach with fine pebbles that don't stick to your body
Fantastic experience: Small elegant beach village
Fantastic experience: The beach is quite spacious, bring shoes for better comfort, the water looked amazing, although we didn't go in, the views were beautiful, very clear, and there were many people snorkeling. There are tourist boats on the same beach, but they are separated from the bathers.

Fantastic experience: There is no content, but the water is clean, and there are no long shallows, it's simple and straightforward.
Fantastic experience: Pleasant time at the beach and in the surroundings of the picturesque town
Fantastic experience: Sandy, spacious beach in the bay at the foot of a beautiful fortress. Clean water, gentle descent to the sea.
Fantastic experience: The beach is very nice, but you definitely need to have water shoes. The beach consists of pebbles and the seabed as well. That can be painful. The water is very clear.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful
Fantastic experience: Excellent and tranquil
Fantastic experience: Breakfast by the sea. Tranquility, peace, and calm.
Fantastic experience: Well-maintained beach with good water quality
Positive experience: It is the most important beach in Tossa, right in the center, a beach with white sand and crystal clear waters surrounded by restaurants, with a view of the Islet, the Tossa Castle, and its Lighthouse.
Negative experience: It is a great place to go if you are 'eurotrash.'
Negative experience: Not safe with small children. The water gets deep quickly.
Positive experience: Beach next to the castle, small not too big with lots of shops and hospitality establishments. It is a bit rocky but it is charming.
Fantastic experience: We visited Tossa De Mar just for a few hours while waiting for our flight and I do not regret it. Beautiful views, very nice beach, a lot of food places and cute souvenir shops. Would recommend to visit for the full day!
Fantastic experience: Magnificent
Positive experience: Very large beach, vast and with a magnificent view of the ramparts but: - horrible diesel smell - presence of jellyfish - round trip by boat, so noisy. Really not a good time, we returned to the hotel after 20 minutes.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach
Fantastic experience: One of the most beautiful beaches in Spain that I have visited
Positive experience: Lovely beach, there is a small step when entering the water, with a spectacular castle on one side of the beach that is incredible when you're swimming.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach located in a charming cove.
Fantastic experience: My happy place ❤️
Fantastic experience: One of the main spots in Tossa de Mar. It is the largest and most popular beach, but it is still incredibly beautiful. Very well maintained and with a lovely view of the castle, which makes it unique. Several options for restaurants, cafes, and ice cream shops along the promenade. In addition, it is possible to book boat tours at the ticket offices located right on the beach.
Positive experience: Coarse sand beach, there is a pretty big drop when entering the water, it is wide but somewhat short, views of the walls.
Positive experience: The beaches in Tossa are not sandy, but rather small pebbles. The beaches are not equipped. There are no changing cabins, no showers. The sea is deep. The bottom is rocky. A few steps from the shore - and there is no bottom anymore. Why do people come here with small children? It's dangerous. The streets of Tossa are narrow and unkempt. Where do the millions earned from tourists go? I see abandonment and poverty everywhere here. In these streets, cars and mopeds are coming at you every second, and there are incredibly many of them. You can't relax... The noise from the mopeds is terrible, and we have to breathe in these emissions.
Positive experience: A delightful beach, very peaceful and very clean, too bad it's not white sand, but the tranquility is spectacular.
Fantastic experience: Very beautiful beach with wonderfully blue water and little waves. Wonderful.
Fantastic experience: Very beautiful beach with clear water, plus, there is no sand which is more pleasant!
Negative experience: Beautiful beach. But it tends to be crowded. It's not sand, it's pebbles, and in the water, there are stones. The shore is very steep to get in and out. The water quickly covers you and you can't touch the bottom. It's quite annoying with the boats in the way. It has nice views of the fortification and little else. Such a shame.
Positive experience: Nice beach from which you can see the coast and the walls.
Fantastic experience: Mycket fin strand lite dyra solstolar o parsoll.
Positive experience: Bonita playa, bonitas vistas.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic.
Positive experience: Very beautiful beach
Negative experience: Beautiful city and beach, would be even better if tourism companies didn’t block a big part of the sand to dock their boats, they complain even if you are near the borders of their space (but outside), very stupid way to explore tourism
Negative experience: There are much better beaches in the area, plus there is like a film of oil floating on the surface of the water, probably due to the back and forth of motorboats right in the middle of the beach making constant trips for tourist cruises at sea, which I do recommend among other things.
Positive experience: Beach next to the walls, which gives it a special charm. But it is very crowded and the beach is not sandy, better to wear water shoes. It also has a good depth, so care should be taken with children; otherwise, it's better to go to the rocky area, full of schools of fish. Wearing snorkeling goggles is a must.
Fantastic experience: Clean and scenic beach, among the most beautiful on the Costa Brava
Negative experience: The beach was extremely crowded and people were literally piling up. Otherwise, the beach is beautiful. The sea is calm and the beach is pebbly. You just have to know that in the middle, ships and smaller boats dock - swimming is prohibited at this spot. If you don’t like crowds and large groups on the beach, you should not visit this beach.
Positive experience: The beach itself isn't that bad, except for a few points. There are no showers, it gets very crowded, and you have to walk over people who are not always in a good mood. There are no fun activities either, just a bar and that's it. My conclusion is that we will spend our vacation somewhere else next time.
Fantastic experience: Fascinating Spanish beach rich in tranquility!
Positive experience: Tossa de Mar beach, small, hard pebbly beach, beautiful castle and old historic village.
Positive experience: Large beautiful beach, beautiful rocks. A large part of the water area is occupied by boats. Here, the ferry also stops. Many cafes.
Negative experience: Very crowded
