La Malagueta Beach
Information
Playa de la Malagueta, located in the heart of Málaga, is a vibrant urban beach that combines accessibility with a lively atmosphere. Known for its long stretch of sand and nearby seafood shacks, the beach offers amenities such as rented sunbeds and umbrellas, making it a functional spot for relaxation.
Visitors appreciate the lively ambiance, perfect for social gatherings and enjoyable beach bars, while the proximity to local attractions enhances its appeal. However, several reviews express concerns about cleanliness, with the beach often described as overcrowded and sometimes dirty, particularly with litter and debris on the sand and water.
Despite mixed reviews on water quality and sand texture, which some describe as grey and rocky, there are moments of charm, especially in the evenings when the area is quieter. For those looking for a typical beach experience while close to the city, Playa de la Malagueta remains a popular yet polarizing destination.

Negative experience: Nice beach but impossible to park, better to go on foot.
Fantastic experience: City beach, accessible on foot from any point in the center, quite clean, water a bit murky, annoying wind if strong.
Positive experience: Bad for parking, good atmosphere, very clean beach and great views, very crowded to go with family.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach well equipped with disabled access, public showers, very wide and spacious, clean sea, with beach bars where you can eat espetos or sardine skewers and any type of fish. Blue Flag.

Positive experience: The best? Its proximity to the center. The worst? Always very crowded. It's just another beach in Malaga city. The water is not clear and people keep passing by shouting about mojitos, beers, massages, or sarongs. So don't expect to relax for a while because it's impossible!! After 7 PM, the buildings cast shadows on the beach and you end up without sun.
Fantastic experience: Ciclismo MTB.

Negative experience: Dirty and dusty black sand that sticks to everything, my towel was dark brown afterwards! Some nice shady spots.
Positive experience: There is a sweet spot where it's very sandy between the two beach bars with a nice sand bar 20m into the water
Negative experience: I’ve been to several Spanish beaches before, and this was my first disappointment. I can get over the fact that the crushed shell sand is painfully sharp and that the water gets deep very quickly. But when I saw things floating on the water that looked like they came from sewage, I didn’t want to go in any deeper. If you're coming here mainly for the beach, I wouldn't recommend this town.
Positive experience: The sand in this beach is quite dusty and rocky, and it was somewhat painful to walk over the rocks into the sea. But the location and general atmosphere were nice, and it was not too crowded when I went.
Fantastic experience: I had a wonderful time here. The sand was clean, the water was crystal clear, and the atmosphere was incredibly relaxing. I really appreciated the facilities available, like the showers and restrooms. The beach was well-maintained, and the surrounding scenery made it a perfect spot for a day out. The staff were friendly and helpful, making it even more enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this beach to anyone looking for a peaceful and beautiful place to spend the day.

Positive experience: There is a sweet spot where it's very sandy between the two beach bars with a nice sand bar 20m into the water
Fantastic experience: A good beach with beach bars along the shore. Not far from Malaga city centre.
Fantastic experience: It's a beach with showers, beach bars, and a promenade where you enjoy walking, cycling, or doing sports in the small areas set up for workouts. Not to mention the beach bars and their good food along with their famous mirrors. Eating there is amazing while looking at the sea and enjoying the Málaga sun.

Negative experience: It had been a long time since I went to this beach. My wife and I were in Malaga for a concert at the beginning of October and decided the next day to go to MALAGUETA BEACH. What a disappointment we suffered, starting from the cleanliness on the beach: the disgusting sand, full of cigarette butts, condoms, etc. Has the beach manager ever been there? The sunbeds were dirty, worn out; the price paid does not justify it. The harassment from vendors of all kinds: mojitos, alcohol, all kinds of cans, fruit without hygienic controls, towels, blankets, etc. We even experienced anxiety, as tension arose due to competition among them, bordering on physical aggression. The police presence was nonexistent. In short, a day to forget.

Positive experience: There is a sweet spot where it's very sandy between the two beach bars with a nice sand bar 20m into the water
Positive experience: With a long stretch of samd there are many spots to swim. Surprisingly to me, the water was very warm in june but the sea was not as transparent as you would expect. There were dirty stuff floating in it. That’s a shame.

Positive experience: the further you go from the city, the better the beaches get! definitely worth the walk away to a more secluded and clean area

Positive experience: Huge beautiful beach and very clean water! Restaurants and toilets nearby. Unfortunately, the water (due to the Atlantic current) was 'cold as ice' at 20 degrees. Only for ice divers.
Positive experience: The shade of the palms that saves your life from a skin burn is what I mainly loved about this beach: beautiful sand, nice sea, well-equipped but with many free spots. If you are young, it's the best. I am not, so I enjoyed it less than I should have.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach, quite crowded but worth it considering the great presence of beach bars, facilities, and local bars. Clean sea. If you go further, there is also an area for disabled and elderly people with specific equipment to allow those in wheelchairs to bathe. There are also inflatable attractions (for a fee) as entertainment.
Fantastic experience: Excellent place with a clean beach and various spots to relax if you don't want to go to the sandy beach. There are a good number of showers to rinse off the sand after the beach. There are some corners with shade.
Fantastic experience: Wide and clean beach, even though we are out of season. Equipped with public restrooms, several affordable places, establishments, free beach, sports equipment, and beach volleyball courts.

Fantastic experience: A good beach with beach bars along the shore. Not far from Malaga city centre.
Fantastic experience: A good place to feel relief from the hot city center
Positive experience: With a long stretch of samd there are many spots to swim. Surprisingly to me, the water was very warm in june but the sea was not as transparent as you would expect. There were dirty stuff floating in it. That’s a shame.
Fantastic experience: Nice place to take rest, bath and swim. Showers nearby.

Positive experience: A fair choice close to the city.
Positive experience: the further you go from the city, the better the beaches get! definitely worth the walk away to a more secluded and clean area
Positive experience: It will surely be better in spring, summer. In November everything is closed.
Negative experience: Incredibly dirty beach. Trash everywhere. You shouldn't walk barefoot here risking cutting your feet on plastic and metal. Dark coarse sand and stones. Dirty water. The showers on the beach did not work. I was here in December. I had completely different expectations of Malaga's beaches. Horrible. I recommend a trip to Nerja's beaches instead of this one.
Positive experience: The area near the pier was a mess, with all the sand disturbed by the machines. A lamentable sight.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful and large square but there was quite a bit of garbage due to recent floods.
Fantastic experience: A wonderful beach
Fantastic experience: The water is beautiful.....
Positive experience: Not as clean as expected, lack of peace due to annoying sellers / massage women. Beware of asian woman offering massages. She keeps touching people and repeating 'massage, massage' even after multiple no's. I would even think she works in a gang wanting to rob you while distracting, who knows. Be careful.
Positive experience: Very crowded and dirty
Negative experience: Beach with dark sand, a lot of people, water not very clear. I would choose another place but it's not bad at all.
Negative experience: Horrible beach! Extremely dirty, full of trash, rude people drink and are not able to take their own garbage. Don't waste your time staying at this beach. What a pity! It's so poorly maintained.
Positive experience: The beach is definitely very beautiful, but the sea absolutely is not. Additionally, there is a nauseating smell from the water that lingers on you.... The cost for a sun umbrella and 2 loungers is €18 per day. The cocktail service on the beach is highly appreciated, costing €5 each.
Positive experience: Very small beach and too many people, I imagine that in other months it must be more beautiful, I will have to find out.
Positive experience: Tourist beach, decent and clean. Nothing more. It's not the best option in Málaga.
Fantastic experience: Umbrellas and sunbeds, lifeguard, bar.
Fantastic experience: I love it
Positive experience: Between the beach, the city, outdoor gym, and people telling you that you have to pay €5 if you want to take a photo of a sand crocodile built by a man.
Fantastic experience: Super beautiful beach
Negative experience: The beach is in bad shape. It can not even compare to others on the coast. The sunbeds are dirty, uncomfortable and expensive ('18 euros for 2'). The people selling stuff are roaming on it. The water and the sand are dirty. You'd be better going somewhere else like Nerja or Torremolinos.
Negative experience: Beautiful beach, unfortunately the water and sand are polluted by people who throw their waste on the ground. The beach is quieter starting at 7 PM, there are many fewer people.
Negative experience: I give one star because it's not possible to give zero. The beach is dirty with pigeons, the water is full of plastics and there is a foamy layer on the surface. For me, it is incomprehensible how it can have such a high rating.
Positive experience: Coarse sand, many stones, and dirty.
Fantastic experience: Crystal clear waters, the beach is beautiful. No restrooms...
Fantastic experience: Beautiful, clean, nice, very crowded due to the high temperature
Negative experience: It's not sand, it's dirt full of dust, filthy to the maximum, with water always full of foam, disgusting from start to finish. Every year like this, every day the water is dirtier and the sand has remnants of debris that were used to fill in after a storm. I'm surprised that people are already bathing in the midst of garbage.
Positive experience: Lovely beach but it could be cleaner. Expect to pay €7 per sunbed for the rental.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful, fine pebbly beach. Lots of shells and plenty of opportunities to swim.
Fantastic experience: Sunbeds: Prices 2024: Umbrella and 2 sunbeds 14 Euros. 7 days for 84 Euros. The advantage is that you get a fixed spot for the 7 days. Towels are also offered, sealed in plastic bags, very hygienic. There is also a small table with the umbrella. You also get an ashtray from the staff. Overall very good. The beach is great, just as the other reviews here say.
Positive experience: Many stones and no water in the showers
Negative experience: I would say this beach has to be taken care of. The sand is not nice, no showers are working, and the restrooms are not in good condition. It was not a pleasure to be at this beach. Sorry.

Positive experience: The beach is ok, but not something wow. Sand is grey with some stones. In the sea at first few meters are stones and later sand. If you dont like walk on stones - water shoes will be required. In general most beaches around Malaga are like this. We were in the begining of august - beach was so so so overcrawded. I have never seen so many people in the beach. In 1m already other family was sitting :)
Positive experience: The water is usually calm and very beautiful, with many beach bars. But the sand is gravelly and has pieces of shells, so it feels sharp. Also, from time to time, trash washes up on the shore... so I have mixed feelings about this beach.
Fantastic experience: Bring a parasol and don't expect to take off your flip-flops before getting into the water, the sand is burning hot!
Negative experience: Very dirty beach, both the water and the sand, filled with cigarette butts. Overcrowded. However, a great atmosphere for young people.
Positive experience: Well, it's not the most beautiful beach in the world, but the water temperature is ideal for the month of July, the little palm trees give a cool touch when you look from the water. And the 'waiters' who come by selling mojitos save your day.
Positive experience: Long and narrow beach, I was disappointed, terrible shower service. If you go with small kids, cover up as soon as you get in, not recommended.
Positive experience: The beach is acceptable but there are no showers due to the drought. Very bad. People use the drinking fountain to shower and wash their feet or the water fountains. As a management of tourism promotion, it gives a very bad image and worse service. There are ways to solve the service offerings, but putting quality in tourism on a flag at the beach is very far from providing quality. The city is very nice and clean overall.
Positive experience: Very touristy beach. But if you keep walking, there are more places that are quiet. I recommend staying at Chringuito, there is a lot of shade there too.
Fantastic experience: Beauty
Negative experience: DIRTY beach, DIRTY sea and ugly, ill-mannered people, pure periphery!!! Crowded with teenagers who think they own the place. Not worth the trip...
Positive experience: This month I visited: there was only one functioning restroom area; the beach showers disappointed me (they were present but non-functional); the sand was not fine, and the sea water was very cold, with no gradual entry into the water until it reached shoulder height. I noticed the price for 2 sun loungers and an umbrella was €18.
Fantastic experience: Nice beach not far from the center with enough space for everyone. There are a few shaded areas and some places nearby. Right on the beach, there are also a few bars. It's just a shame that the showers don't work and the toilets are unbelievably dirty and actually unusable. Otherwise, I was able to enjoy my time here very much.
Positive experience: Busy place but fun
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach.
Positive experience: The shower didn't work.
Fantastic experience: Sandy and large beach
Positive experience: A must-visit place in Malaga, be aware it has a pebble beach, which can hurt the most sensitive feet.
Positive experience: The water at the beach has an oily film, probably due to the nearby port.
Positive experience: A very crowded beach with sand and sea
Negative experience: There's no place to take a proper shower. Thank you, Malaga municipality.
Negative experience: very common free beach. Lacks restrooms and showers.
Negative experience: Nice beach but impossible to park, better to go on foot.
Positive experience: The beach itself is very nice, but too many cigarette butts and plastics lying around the beach...
Positive experience: Beautiful, average city beach :)
Positive experience: Nice beach, the sea not so much, but all in all pleasant. We sat in the shade of the large trees that are along the beach.
Positive experience: The sand is not real, it's gray crushed dust, the water is always cold, quite dirty. The highest concentration of tourists is on this beach. This year (2024) public showers on the beach were completely turned off, as well as places to wash your feet, due to drought in Spain, but now there’s nothing to wash off the gray dust after the beach. Malaga is not the place to choose for your vacation if a nice beach and sea are important to you.
Positive experience: One of the worst beaches on the coast, narrow and non-functioning showers, the smell of urine everywhere on the promenade. The sand is thick and stony. Unfortunately, there seems to be no point in searching for pretty beaches in this part of the coast until Tarifa.
Positive experience: Not great, bring shoes because I have never seen such scorching sand and very cold water in all seasons. Few beach clubs and services, so it's a large free beach with all the pros and cons.
Positive experience: Huge beautiful beach and very clean water! Restaurants and toilets nearby. Unfortunately, the water (due to the Atlantic current) was 'cold as ice' at 20 degrees. Only for ice divers.
Fantastic experience: Excellent beach in the city center! The only thing is, we all - both residents and guests of Malaga - need to take care of its cleanliness - pick up our trash, not bury drink lids and cans in the sand, and other garbage.
Positive experience: The shade of the palms that saves your life from a skin burn is what I mainly loved about this beach: beautiful sand, nice sea, well-equipped but with many free spots. If you are young, it's the best. I am not, so I enjoyed it less than I should have.
Positive experience: Super beach. Sandy, wide, well-equipped with toilets, showers, food outlets, and all possible attractions for beachgoers.
Fantastic experience: Nice city beach in Malaga
Fantastic experience: Very clean, beautiful, and I enjoyed it.
Negative experience: Very bad. Terrible facilities and no water. The concessionaires are very poorly attended. It only has fame. It is not recommendable.
Negative experience: Very dirty unfortunately, you can see the arrival of yachts up to the water, which usually stays cool has warmed up.
Fantastic experience: I was in the area where the inflatable water games are near the Cachalote restaurant, there is always space and it is very quiet, there is a bathroom.
Positive experience: The beach is beautiful, everything is super nice, but it hurts me a lot to know that Málaga destroys such a beautiful and charming environment with THE EXCREMENT OF PEOPLE. The truth is I love the beach, but it smells like a decomposing tiger. I would go to take pictures, but it's not good for swimming...
Fantastic experience: A quite extensive and beautiful beach. Very clean and pleasant to spend a good time. Although it was still quite cold and had strong waves due to the season, it is suitable for adults and children but has little supervision. It has restrooms and water jets, but the latter were not working. There are many nearby restaurants and beach bars that sell a great variety of necessary items you might need during your stay. There are also chairs and canopies for rent for €18. Photos and review in July 2024.
Positive experience: When we went from around 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM, the beach was calm, the water was cool, they have games in the water for kids, and you can eat well at their beach bars, and it's not overly expensive; they have reasonable prices. I don't give it 5 stars because there are always things to improve; for instance, I don't know why the water taps for rinsing off were turned off, and I didn't see any restrooms nearby—don't know if there are any??? Other than that, everything was fine, very clean water and transparent.
Positive experience: Beautiful beach, comfortable near the center, many beach bars for lunch
Positive experience: The beach is like any other on the coast - wide and full of small pebbles. A large number of bars, public restrooms are very dirty.
Fantastic experience: The staff at the beach were friendly, I didn't like the smell, but this place is beautiful.
Fantastic experience: The beach to go if you are in Malaga. Not far from the Center and lots of chiringuito. Can get very busy and many deck chairs rental.
Positive experience: Amazing beach with one drawback. At the place we were, going to the water it's best to wear some flip-flops because there are often stones and pieces of shells thrown by the waves near the water, it can happen that you step on a slightly sharper piece. Other than that, everything is great, there are plenty of umbrellas with sunbeds available, for which we paid 18 euros per day (2 sunbeds and an umbrella), toilets, unfortunately, the external 'shower' where you could rinse off the sand did not work.
Fantastic experience: Very beautiful beach with sand just steps from the city center, full of beach bars where you can enjoy delicious dishes and grilled fish. Clean and clear sea.
Negative experience: The water is very dirty and polluted
Fantastic experience: It is worth going, there is a lot of activity in the area and it is very nice.
Positive experience: It tends to be very crowded but it is relatively close to the center.
Fantastic experience: You haven't been to Málaga if you didn't take a picture at the lighthouse and walk along La Malagueta. Stunning Málaga!
Negative experience: We attempted to go there to take our 3 children, but they told us that since 2 of them were under 13, we needed a parent present. This was fine, until they tried to charge us for the parent (their grandma), who was only going to sit there and make sure nobody got hurt. We refused to pay the already questionable fee ($18 per person) and said never mind.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place, lovely water
Fantastic experience: Top
Fantastic experience: Very long and beautiful sandy beach. Definitely a must-try when visiting Malaga.
Fantastic experience: City beach, accessible on foot from any point in the center, quite clean, water a bit murky, annoying wind if strong.
Positive experience: Beautiful beach, large, well located. However, people do not respect the smoking ban on the beach so we find cigarette butts underfoot (and not all the dirty people are tourists!). Also, being constantly approached by sellers, ugh, and they insist! Too persistent even.
Negative experience: The views are beautiful and the close location to Old Town is good. However, it is overrated. The sand is dusty and dirty and has a lot of small and sharp stones stabbing your bare feet. It was painful and didn't allow me to enjoy the beach at all or even swim.
