El Médano Beach
Information
El Médano is a vibrant beach located in the south of Tenerife, known for its extensive sandy area and stunning views of the Montaña Roja. It is particularly popular among water sports enthusiasts, especially those who enjoy windsurfing and kitesurfing due to the constant winds that the area experiences. The beach features a variety of services, including:
- Bars and restaurants along the seaside.
- Rental services for sunbeds and umbrellas.
- Well-maintained facilities, including showers and lifeguards.
- Areas suitable for families with children.
However, visitors should note:
- The beach can become overcrowded, especially in peak season.
- Strong winds may make it uncomfortable for sunbathing and swimming.
- There have been occasional issues with water quality, leading to temporary closures.
Despite these drawbacks, El Médano remains a must-visit destination for those looking to enjoy the beach atmosphere, participate in water sports, or simply relax by the shore.

Fantastic experience: Nice beach easy to access, with many shops and restaurants right next to it. Stunning view of the Red Mountain and kite surfing activities possible thanks to the numerous centers lining the beach.
Positive experience: It's beautiful, small but has its charm. The difficult part is finding a parking spot nearby.
Fantastic experience: Spectacular and beautiful with the wind that dominates for the enjoyment of the countless types of surfers that frequent it
Positive experience: I enjoy Playa Grande. They removed the identification 'El Médano'. And they haven't put up the sign again, which is so trendy in the world, to identify the place. When will they put new ones up? The wooden path needs to be reviewed; some pieces of wood are higher due to the humidity. The stones in the guaguas area should be filled with material (that the weather has taken away). Accidents can happen, and there’s no need for that. Better safe than sorry.
Fantastic experience: Without wind, the best beach in Tenerife, very well located, in high season it's difficult to find parking.

Fantastic experience: The beach is volcanic rock which is different to the usual sandy beaches but it's really nice here. There aren't that many sunbeds and umbrellas for to it being a small bay but it's lovely to lay on the rocks or beach. Very high tide after a full moon so consider that when you visit. Lots of cafes near the seafront but you should try the places up the local streets, they're fantastic especially the pizza restaurant.
Positive experience: Shan is a great place with three separate eating spaces, one indoors and two outdoors (both with canopy's and one for smokers and the other not so much). The gluten free vegan options are few, but tasty all the same, and although the service is very friendly, it can sometimes be slow. I have always had a warm welcome here, and it is one of the best Chinese restaurants on the island. Very few tourists which is great and plenty of room to sit. My family and friends who have visited have always been blown away by the choices available as there is Japanese, Thai and Chinese food available. Portions are large and doggy bags are available... And thankfully there are no dogs on the menu Enjoy your meal, I am sure you will!

Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach just a few minutes from Tenerife South airport. Ideal beach for those who practice kite surfing, windsurfing, and for those who want to try surfing. Great schools available on-site with Italian instructors where you can also rent equipment. However, if you want to go there to sunbathe on the beach, be prepared with patience because the wind is constant at all hours of the day and the sand is quite bothersome.
Positive experience: Black sand beach, small and with little sandy area. The little sandy area that it has is full of sun loungers, making it difficult for those who go with a towel, especially when the tide is high. The area is more traditional with various shops. There are places nearby to park the car.
Positive experience: A lot of wind that lifts sand and it's bothersome. We left earlier than expected.
Fantastic experience: Large beach with mixed sand, if you don't bring a parasol there are shaded areas next to some rocks
Fantastic experience: Sandy paradise with excellent opportunities for water sports, particularly wind and kitesurfing, making it a must-visit destination for enthusiasts.

Fantastic experience: Nice beach easy to access, with many shops and restaurants right next to it. Stunning view of the Red Mountain and kite surfing activities possible thanks to the numerous centers lining the beach.
Fantastic experience: Windy beach but very wide ..sunbeds..I recommend high tide restaurant
Fantastic experience: A small but beautiful beach in the middle of the city. Loungers and umbrellas for rent are available, as well as bars and restaurants.
Fantastic experience: Phenomenal beach, literally located in the center of the village with bars and restaurants to eat next to it and a playground for children!
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place to visit. Ideal for water sports, but also for walking along the promenade and the harbor. Safe for swimming and a good selection of bars and restaurants.

Fantastic experience: The beach is very clean, very comfortable, located in the city. Very touristy. It is a very pleasant beach. Lots of security and lifeguards. You can go with the family and the little ones. All amenities are very close.
Positive experience: Nice sandy beach for being urban, quite crowded but at the same time with good services, whether they are bathrooms, changing rooms, lifeguards, and a lot of bars and shops.

Positive experience: Lovely looking beach. Temperature of water in August was optimal. But it was windy as hell and overcrowded. Good for wind sports but not really for tanning and swimming.
Fantastic experience: Good beach for swimming, there are seaweeds during the first 20 meters, then the water is clean. Quite crowded, there are tourists in July.
Fantastic experience: The beach is very clean, very comfortable, located in the city. Very touristy. It is a very pleasant beach. Lots of security and lifeguards. You can go with the family and the little ones. All amenities are very close.
Fantastic experience: Sandy paradise with excellent opportunities for water sports, particularly wind and kitesurfing, making it a must-visit destination for enthusiasts.
Fantastic experience: I love this beach. It's great to go with kids, there aren't many rocks in the water and when the tide is low, there's a lot of sandy area to play. The waves usually aren't very strong, so they can play jumping the waves. Moreover, it has spectacular views with the red mountain in the background. The downside is the wind like in the rest of the area, which when it's too much, is uncomfortable because it lifts the sand. Also sometimes they close it due to microalgae or waste in summer.

Fantastic experience: Nice beach easy to access, with many shops and restaurants right next to it. Stunning view of the Red Mountain and kite surfing activities possible thanks to the numerous centers lining the beach.
Fantastic experience: Best beach in Tenerife. There are loads of kiteboarding and windsurfers at one end and then the other side is swimming for everyone. Loads of restaurants and cafes around to eat and drink at. The beach can get busy on weekends but it makes it even better.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place to have a terrace and watch kite surfers, etc.
Positive experience: Playa El Médano is very exposed to the winds, which makes it perfect for sports that require this natural force, such as kitesurfing and windsurfing. On one side, the beach appears wilder and hosts a nudist area at the foot of Montaña Roja. On the other side, the realm of sails opens up, with the town reaching right out to the ocean. It is a fascinating place, with many bars overlooking the beach, which, thanks to its colors and the play of tides, offers a dreamy panorama. Absolutely a must-see, or at least worth visiting for a swim, followed by an spritz by the sea!

Fantastic experience: Spectacular and beautiful with the wind that dominates for the enjoyment of the countless types of surfers that frequent it
Fantastic experience: Must-see, Must-Surf!

Fantastic experience: Beautiful square, pleasant in April. Fine sand and a nice entrance into the water. The view of the Roha volcano is wonderful.
Fantastic experience: Heartfelt spot. Check the weather on windguru and go there even on a day without wind, beautiful and wild.
Fantastic experience: A nice beach and good atmosphere.
Fantastic experience: I loved this beach and this charming little town, I highly recommend it to you!
Positive experience: A place where they have displaced the locals from their entire life, foreign territory, I would not return.
Fantastic experience: Superb

Fantastic experience: Best beach in Tenerife. There are loads of kiteboarding and windsurfers at one end and then the other side is swimming for everyone. Loads of restaurants and cafes around to eat and drink at. The beach can get busy on weekends but it makes it even better.
Fantastic experience: Have been visiting since 1986. I would now agree with the locals and say that there needs to be a halt on building more hotels. I am pleased to say that I am still recognised in my favourite bar
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place to have a terrace and watch kite surfers, etc.

Fantastic experience: Our favorite spot on the island
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach. Many surfers. Suitable for walks. Also with a dog. No cafes.
Fantastic experience: Small beach but not crowded. Available sunbeds 2 plus umbrella for €12, shower and toilets. Close to restaurants or a local shop with sandwiches priced from €1.97 to €2.50. Also a playground for children. Next to a surfing beach and a nice view of the mountain.
Fantastic experience: Amazing place! Highly recommended
Positive experience: Beautiful and mystical! A must-visit place in Tenerife.
Fantastic experience: Large beach with mixed sand, if you don't bring a parasol there are shaded areas next to some rocks
Fantastic experience: The beach is very clean, very comfortable, located in the city. Very touristy. It is a very pleasant beach. Lots of security and lifeguards. You can go with the family and the little ones. All amenities are very close.
Positive experience: Surf zone for Tenerife. We enjoyed the resort El Medano and the neighbouring La Tejita beach, and Montana Roja swerving the west side of Tenerife. Recommend getting a ferry over to La Gomera for a few days, and dolphin watch en route x
Positive experience: A nice place to relax, you can watch windsurfers practice as entertainment.
Fantastic experience: Lovely, small seaside resort where you can stroll along the beach on a small promenade and enjoy the many surfers and kite surfers taking advantage of favorable surfing conditions. There are nice little shops and there is no mass tourism anywhere.
Fantastic experience: Sandy paradise with excellent opportunities for water sports, particularly wind and kitesurfing, making it a must-visit destination for enthusiasts.
Fantastic experience: Phenomenal beach, literally located in the center of the village with bars and restaurants to eat next to it and a playground for children!

Positive experience: Beautiful as always, but for the first time without wind.
Fantastic experience: Best beach when it comes to the weather. It's always nice.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach for walking
Positive experience: It's okay but always crowded... It depends on what you're looking for...
Fantastic experience: Rest and stopover place. Bohemian atmosphere. Picturesque scenery. I felt excellent. I recommend 100%.
Positive experience: Nice sandy beach for being urban, quite crowded but at the same time with good services, whether they are bathrooms, changing rooms, lifeguards, and a lot of bars and shops.
Fantastic experience: El Medano is a dreamy place with a unique atmosphere. The beach is a paradise for kite surfers.
Fantastic experience: Cute place, a bit windy, but charming, with a quiet little town!
Fantastic experience: Spectacular and beautiful with the wind that dominates for the enjoyment of the countless types of surfers that frequent it
Fantastic experience: Vast sandy beach and is a popular spot for windsurfing due to its consistent winds. Besides water sports, it also offers a laid-back atmosphere and beautiful views.
Positive experience: The best beach in the south, it should be preserved, no more construction.
Fantastic experience: Priceless
Negative experience: A lot of people are on the beach considering its size, and there’s less space to swim. The town hall is allowing foreign companies to take over parts of the coastline, and the area for making profits from surfboard lessons is growing. The coastline belongs to the community, not to foreign businesses that set up to make profit.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place to visit. Ideal for water sports, but also for walking along the promenade and the harbor. Safe for swimming and a good selection of bars and restaurants.
Fantastic experience: It's paradise. In El Médano, the essence of a fishing village combines where you can practice any sport, especially water sports, with a bohemian touch.
Positive experience: Quiet beach with services. Shops and bars along the promenade close to the beach.
Fantastic experience: Sandy and long, which is an advantage (walks), next to a peak from which there is a beautiful view of the sunset.
Positive experience: Very nice place, especially for surfing because it's more windy than other regions in Tenerife. But unfortunately not always recommended for swimmers.
Fantastic experience: Great for all types of surf sports, nice scene
Positive experience: City beach with dark volcanic sand. There are quite a few people but it's clean.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach in a populated area, inexpensive umbrellas and sunbeds. In El Médano, there is always a bit of wind, so I recommend it to windsurfing lovers, etc...
Positive experience: For sports like surfing or windsurfing, it's great, but for swimming, no, there's always too much wind.
Fantastic experience: An interesting pleasant beach with a gentle entrance. There are shower points, lifeguards, and medical personnel. Along the entire beach, there are nice restaurants and cafes. A cozy little promenade that leaves wonderful memories.
Fantastic experience: A spectacular place with beautiful beaches
Fantastic experience: Beautiful and quiet beach. There are options to rent sun loungers and umbrellas.
Fantastic experience: Nice place. Be careful of the rocks that are not visible under the water.
Fantastic experience: Always worth a visit. Currently very quiet.
Positive experience: Beautiful beach with gold-black sand, clean water. Sufficient number of restaurants and shops by the beach. I deduct a star for the lack of the sign 'El Medano' - it may have been permanently taken down, it may have been dismantled or gone for renovation... I don't know, it is simply not there at the moment.
Positive experience: You will enjoy it if you come with this learned: the wind is the boss. Do you want to build a medieval-style sandcastle? Wrong: the wind has other more postmodern plans. Do you intend to show off your new haircut? Forget it, here the wind is your stylist.
Positive experience: A beautiful beach with black sand... I liked it.. I hope to come back..
Fantastic experience: Fine sand beach, no waves, you can see little fish, with showers
Fantastic experience: El Medano beach stands out for the beauty of its fine sand and the stunning view it offers of the Red Mountain.
Positive experience: It was too windy for lazy relaxation, but excellent for windsurfing!
Negative experience: As every summer, E-coli in the water and unable to swim. No changes in 10 years.
Negative experience: The sandy area is fine, but be careful as there are visible blooms and the city council does not warn that bathing may be dangerous. Also, the water always looks dirty and murky.
Fantastic experience: Without wind, the best beach in Tenerife, very well located, in high season it's difficult to find parking.
Fantastic experience: Great natural beach. Safe for swimming.
Fantastic experience: Very beautiful beach. The walking area is very well made. And there are restaurants with a sea view!
Fantastic experience: Cool beach actualy played football and swim here cool memories
Fantastic experience: Good beach with excellent restaurants and park.
Positive experience: Nice beach for surf but too wind!
Positive experience: Disappointing visit to a location beside Tenerife South airport. A very busy town which experiences strong winds attracting a large number of wind surfers. Don't expect a convenient parking space.
Fantastic experience: Great place to visit especially with Children, calm sea, little coves. Super in expensive food. Super day out.
Fantastic experience: Great atmosphere here. Always spend the day here before the flight home. Its next to the airport so easy to get back for flight.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful and picturesque village, full of surfers, kitesurf and windsurf; good restaurants and bars on the beach front.
Fantastic experience: Great place for doing kite surfing. It has a really awesome vibe. There you can find many restaurants, shops, and entertainment.
Fantastic experience: A windy beach perfect for kites, kite surfing and all the other sports involving wind.
Positive experience: Stopped off for a quick drink while hiking on a hot day, the beach was packed!
Positive experience: Really wind usually but really nice for the services, you can just take a coffe or eat something literally 10 seconds from the beach. The town is super nice even if the water is nothing too special. Be careful becuase it’s the most famous place to do kite surfing.
Positive experience: Beautiful beach with black lava sand. Surfing is here very popular. You can find several shops with surfing stuff. Also shops to rent material and surfing classes are here to find. Don't forget to climb the Montaňa Roja and to discover the beaches around this area.
Positive experience: Sand beach. Local restaurants. But very windy.
Fantastic experience: A calm beach. Shallow water so all ages can be in the water. A couple of nice bars and restaurants. I really enjoy this place!
Positive experience: Lovely place, good selection of places to eat and the Saturday market is good. Surf sports are big in El Medano with plenty of hire firms.
Fantastic experience: Lovely old town and harbour, well worth a visit.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful surroundings plenty of places to eat and drink. Variety of food reasonably priced. Great beach area and if your into water sports it's a must
Fantastic experience: Lovely seaside town not far from the airport south. Beautiful beaches, one of them popular with windsurfers. The beach nearest the town is popular with families and is convenient for cafes and shops. Boardwalk and shower facilities available. Buses run from San Miguel and Los Abrigos.
Fantastic experience: We traveled all over the island and visited a bunch of beaches in our week stay and we really liked El Madena and its little boardwalk beachfront and town. Such a fun place to hang out at with great little cafes and shops and tons of people windsurfing or running along the beach. The beach always has something happening on it that makes it interesting and lively. The atmosphere is wonderful and also a great little place to lay out in the sun if you sit in one of the little inlets on the beach so the wind doesn't hit you.
Negative experience: Incredibly ugly and busy. No "beach" to speak of either. Tenerife has infinitely more beautiful, cleaner and sandier beaches. Go here only if you're in to kite surfing etc, but a total waste of time for swimming.
Fantastic experience: Very nice beach. Black and yellow, with fine sand. Surfers, very little windy, as best as you wish. Restaurants with tapas and local food at good prices. Paella, seafood, drinks and one and only Sangria. I will return with my friends. Perhaps I will buy something here. It is awesome.
Fantastic experience: Nice little bay with cute town.
Fantastic experience: Lovely beach with space around you. No annoying just sellers and some great sporting skill on show too.
