Information

El Médano is a vibrant beach located in the south of Tenerife, known for its extensive sandy area and stunning views of the Montaña Roja. It is particularly popular among water sports enthusiasts, especially those who enjoy windsurfing and kitesurfing due to the constant winds that the area experiences. The beach features a variety of services, including:

  • Bars and restaurants along the seaside.
  • Rental services for sunbeds and umbrellas.
  • Well-maintained facilities, including showers and lifeguards.
  • Areas suitable for families with children.

However, visitors should note:

  • The beach can become overcrowded, especially in peak season.
  • Strong winds may make it uncomfortable for sunbathing and swimming.
  • There have been occasional issues with water quality, leading to temporary closures.

Despite these drawbacks, El Médano remains a must-visit destination for those looking to enjoy the beach atmosphere, participate in water sports, or simply relax by the shore.

Fantastic experience: Nice beach easy to access, with many shops and restaurants right next to it. Stunning view of the Red Mountain and kite surfing activities possible thanks to the numerous centers lining the beach.

Positive experience: I enjoy Playa Grande. They removed the identification 'El Médano'. And they haven't put up the sign again, which is so trendy in the world, to identify the place. When will they put new ones up? The wooden path needs to be reviewed; some pieces of wood are higher due to the humidity. The stones in the guaguas area should be filled with material (that the weather has taken away). Accidents can happen, and there’s no need for that. Better safe than sorry.

Fantastic experience: The beach is volcanic rock which is different to the usual sandy beaches but it's really nice here. There aren't that many sunbeds and umbrellas for to it being a small bay but it's lovely to lay on the rocks or beach. Very high tide after a full moon so consider that when you visit. Lots of cafes near the seafront but you should try the places up the local streets, they're fantastic especially the pizza restaurant.

Positive experience: Shan is a great place with three separate eating spaces, one indoors and two outdoors (both with canopy's and one for smokers and the other not so much). The gluten free vegan options are few, but tasty all the same, and although the service is very friendly, it can sometimes be slow. I have always had a warm welcome here, and it is one of the best Chinese restaurants on the island. Very few tourists which is great and plenty of room to sit. My family and friends who have visited have always been blown away by the choices available as there is Japanese, Thai and Chinese food available. Portions are large and doggy bags are available... And thankfully there are no dogs on the menu Enjoy your meal, I am sure you will!

Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach just a few minutes from Tenerife South airport. Ideal beach for those who practice kite surfing, windsurfing, and for those who want to try surfing. Great schools available on-site with Italian instructors where you can also rent equipment. However, if you want to go there to sunbathe on the beach, be prepared with patience because the wind is constant at all hours of the day and the sand is quite bothersome.

Positive experience: Black sand beach, small and with little sandy area. The little sandy area that it has is full of sun loungers, making it difficult for those who go with a towel, especially when the tide is high. The area is more traditional with various shops. There are places nearby to park the car.

Fantastic experience: I love this beach. It's great to go with kids, there aren't many rocks in the water and when the tide is low, there's a lot of sandy area to play. The waves usually aren't very strong, so they can play jumping the waves. Moreover, it has spectacular views with the red mountain in the background. The downside is the wind like in the rest of the area, which when it's too much, is uncomfortable because it lifts the sand. Also sometimes they close it due to microalgae or waste in summer.

Positive experience: Playa El Médano is very exposed to the winds, which makes it perfect for sports that require this natural force, such as kitesurfing and windsurfing. On one side, the beach appears wilder and hosts a nudist area at the foot of Montaña Roja. On the other side, the realm of sails opens up, with the town reaching right out to the ocean. It is a fascinating place, with many bars overlooking the beach, which, thanks to its colors and the play of tides, offers a dreamy panorama. Absolutely a must-see, or at least worth visiting for a swim, followed by an spritz by the sea!

Negative experience: A lot of people are on the beach considering its size, and there’s less space to swim. The town hall is allowing foreign companies to take over parts of the coastline, and the area for making profits from surfboard lessons is growing. The coastline belongs to the community, not to foreign businesses that set up to make profit.

I deduct a star for the lack of the sign 'El Medano' - it may have been permanently taken down, it may have been dismantled or gone for renovation...

Negative experience: As every summer, E-coli in the water and unable to swim. No changes in 10 years.

Negative experience: The sandy area is fine, but be careful as there are visible blooms and the city council does not warn that bathing may be dangerous. Also, the water always looks dirty and murky.

Fantastic experience: Without wind, the best beach in Tenerife, very well located, in high season it's difficult to find parking.

Positive experience: Disappointing visit to a location beside Tenerife South airport. A very busy town which experiences strong winds attracting a large number of wind surfers. Don't expect a convenient parking space.

Positive experience: Really wind usually but really nice for the services, you can just take a coffe or eat something literally 10 seconds from the beach. The town is super nice even if the water is nothing too special. Be careful becuase it’s the most famous place to do kite surfing.

Positive experience: Beautiful beach with black lava sand. Surfing is here very popular. You can find several shops with surfing stuff. Also shops to rent material and surfing classes are here to find. Don't forget to climb the Montaňa Roja and to discover the beaches around this area.

Fantastic experience: Lovely seaside town not far from the airport south. Beautiful beaches, one of them popular with windsurfers. The beach nearest the town is popular with families and is convenient for cafes and shops. Boardwalk and shower facilities available. Buses run from San Miguel and Los Abrigos.

Fantastic experience: We traveled all over the island and visited a bunch of beaches in our week stay and we really liked El Madena and its little boardwalk beachfront and town. Such a fun place to hang out at with great little cafes and shops and tons of people windsurfing or running along the beach. The beach always has something happening on it that makes it interesting and lively. The atmosphere is wonderful and also a great little place to lay out in the sun if you sit in one of the little inlets on the beach so the wind doesn't hit you.

Negative experience: Incredibly ugly and busy. No "beach" to speak of either. Tenerife has infinitely more beautiful, cleaner and sandier beaches. Go here only if you're in to kite surfing etc, but a total waste of time for swimming.

Fantastic experience: Very nice beach. Black and yellow, with fine sand. Surfers, very little windy, as best as you wish. Restaurants with tapas and local food at good prices. Paella, seafood, drinks and one and only Sangria. I will return with my friends. Perhaps I will buy something here. It is awesome.
