Macarella Cove
Information
Cala Macarella is a stunning cove located in Menorca, known for its crystal-clear waters and scenic cliffs. Visitors appreciate the picturesque scenery and the sandy beach that includes a seafood restaurant.
However, it can get very crowded, particularly during the summer months, which may detract from the experience for those seeking tranquility. Many suggest that the beach is overrated due to the abundance of algae near the shore, which can affect the clarity of the water.
For those looking to reach the cove, it is accessible via a 25–30 minute walk from Cala Galdana, or by bus. Parking is limited and fills up quickly, so taking the bus is often recommended.
Overall, Cala Macarella offers beautiful views and a lovely beach, but potential visitors should be mindful of the crowding and algae conditions.

Fantastic experience: Cala Macarella is, without doubt, the most beautiful cala in Menorca. I visited it by boat from Puerto Deportivo Cala en Bosc, which made the experience even more special. Once there, you can hike for about 20 minutes on each side to enjoy breathtaking views of the cala from above—absolutely worth it. Important to note: the parking area is closed, so if you want to access the beach by foot you’ll need to take a bus from the city. A true gem of Menorca that you shouldn’t miss!
Negative experience: After an endless road, a downhill and uphill walk of more than a kilometer, you find a HORRIBLE bar/café/beach bar that occupies half of the cove. For me, it is incomprehensible. I agree that access should not be easy, but for everyone, not so that others can profit and invade a natural landscape.
Positive experience: Very nice but I can't imagine in July August! Too many people, no space to settle! Access to parking is very complicated, you have to walk from Cala Galdana to get there!
Fantastic experience: Very pretty beach, a bit larger than its neighbor Macarelleta, but also filled with posidonia, especially in the low season like here. Victim of its success even at this time, but offering a very nice place to picnic under the many trees providing shade and to cool off in the sea, still nice even at the end of October. The parking is located 20 minutes walking and even though it is large, it can quickly fill up during high attendance! I still recommend this beach as a stop on your trip!
Fantastic experience: A beautiful cove with difficult access.

Fantastic experience: Very beautiful beach. It is accessed by a path that is not prepared for everyone. The coves of Menorca are a true wonder. The color of the water, the sand, the temperature,.... Very beautiful
Fantastic experience: One of the most beautiful coves on the island. After a short walk through natural terrain and shady paths, you reach this little gem. The water is warm and has a great color. The fine sandy beach is very clean, and it goes in shallow. Small schools of fish circle around you in the shallow water. We were here very early in the morning and did not regret the trip from San Bou.
Fantastic experience: Love that beach. Turquoise blue green water and white sand beach.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful beach with fine sand and crystal clear water. Spacious, expansive beach with trees as well. It is a public beach. You can get there by bus or by parking at Cala Galdana beach and then walking on a path in the woods for about 30 minutes. There is also a bar where you can eat and with facilities. Absolutely recommended.
Fantastic experience: The beach takes efforts getting to with a 20 mins walk from the bus stop. But it’s definitely worth the effort! Macarella itself has beautiful clear water but there was quite a bit of algae the day I went. After few mins walk through the algae then you are rewarded with that turquoise water. The real gem of the area is Cala Macareleta which is another 10 mins walk up and down the hill. I saw a lot of people walking towards that area and thought they must know something somewhere better that I didn’t! Cala Macareleta has the softest sand and the view was amazing! I can see why it’s so popular! Having the Cafe Suzy at the beach is a big plus to fuel up after a day spent covering two beaches. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes for the walk and small climb.

Fantastic experience: Great beach, with some trees providing shade. The wildlife is beutiful, snorkelling is highly recommended. There is a beach bar, life guard and kayak renting option. If you get like, you might even encounter some wild goats.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful and quiet cove now in October. We accessed it by walking from Cala Galdana where we left the vehicle parked. The last stretch has wooden steps going down to the cove. There is a restaurant where one can have a drink or lunch. At the other end of the cove, you can take the path that leads to Cala Macarelleta.
Fantastic experience: Charming beach, spacious. A restaurant is located there. Families can spend time there. No seaweed in sight! By going to the right, along the path in the cliff, you access Macarelleta...
Fantastic experience: Very quiet cove, with a bar and restaurant, reachable also by a horse path in half an hour from Cala Galdana.

Arribes be! Porta aigua....

Negative experience: I don't know where some of these reviews were but it does not seem like the same beach we have been to today. Walk was about 20 mins and seemed to go on forever with small children and the sea was absolutely filthy, seaweed everywhere, absolutely no chance of snorkelling or seeing any fish. Completely wasted journey, maybe it the wrong time of year but would advise avoiding in October.

Fantastic experience: Non è per tutti. O meglio, non è per tutti il sentiero da percorrere da Cala Galdana a Cala Macarella. Ma vi dico che noi lo abbiamo fatto con il passeggino. Come?

Fantastic experience: I recommend wearing appropriate footwear as it is mainly a rocky path at the beginning... it takes about 30 minutes to walk; there is a restaurant in the entire cove. You don't need an umbrella as there is plenty of shade from the trees. Highly recommended to go to Macarelleta by kayak and experience it.
Positive experience: The path to get there is somewhat steep and takes about 40 minutes to walk since it is not flat and has slopes, stairs, narrower spots, etc. The cove is beautiful, it has sand so it is easier to find a place to put your belongings and it is also larger than others. Many fish, many boats, and great visibility. You can swim to the next cove, Macarelleta, or continue walking for a bit longer. They have kayak rentals.

Fantastic experience: Next to Macarelleta, two of the beautiful and iconic beaches of Menorca. You have to go, no matter what.

Fantastic experience: A beautiful cove with difficult access.
Negative experience: Beautiful beach ruined by the beach bar, with its generator that is heard more than the waves. Why is it so hard to leave beaches untouched? What a shame.
Fantastic experience: Charming beach, spacious. A restaurant is located there. Families can spend time there. No seaweed in sight! By going to the right, along the path in the cliff, you access Macarelleta...
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place, but you have to wake up early to go. On September 18th at 9:30 we couldn't access because it was full. Amazing.
Fantastic experience: Spectacular
Negative experience: This beach is very pretty (like all the ones on the island) but there are too many people. I don't like being so close to people. There are many beaches on the island where it's much more comfortable. What’s great about the island is precisely that there are many beaches to go to without people half a meter away. This is not a good option.
Fantastic experience: The place is really beautiful, like a postcard. Unfortunately, it was visited in the presence of seaweed and the posidonia phenomenon, so it lost a lot. You can also reach Macarelleta in a 10-minute walk, a bit of a rough path. Very nice but small, at the beginning of August around mid-morning it seemed like the Romagna Riviera... would go back in less crowded periods.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place with a beach, unfortunately during the season the beach is full of tourists.
Positive experience: Overrated beach, beautiful in the early hours of the morning when it is still blue because in the afternoon it turns into stagnant green. The part away from the shore, where the boats are, is beautiful; there the sea is blue. The bus service is convenient but then there are another 20/25 minutes of path to walk. Much much better Macarelleta. Overall, it was disappointing.
Positive experience: 30 minutes of walking, not difficult but demanding especially on the ascent given the elevation change. The cove has a lot of seaweed, but going beyond the first barrier, the sea remains beautiful. We didn't stop here but went to Macarelleta with another 10-15 minutes of steep ascent, I don't know how suitable it might be for children. There are buses that can reach Cala Macarella which save you the half-hour walk. Ask at the info points, we didn't have a scooter and had to park at Cala Gardena.
Positive experience: Very, very beautiful bay, can be reached within 30 minutes on foot from Cala Galdana. The path is easy to walk or there is a bus. In the bay, there is no network or internet reception, but it is worth being offline for the view.
Positive experience: Cala Macarella is one of the most famous beaches in Menorca. We reached it from Ciutadella by taking the bus on Via Perimetral (reservation needs to be made online or on-site, but very often the buses are already full). Once we arrived at the parking lot, there is a 15-minute walk to reach the beach. Unfortunately, during this period, there is a lot of Posidonia, and the sea tends to become dark green at the shore. However, from above, the landscape is really beautiful. With another 10-minute walk, you can reach Cala Macarelleta.
Fantastic experience: Probably one of the best beaches in Menorca, with parking close to the beach 15 minutes away via a cobblestone path.
Negative experience: What a shame, to get to this cove now you either take the bus for 8.50 round trip which I find outrageous because they close the parking, or you park in Cala Galdana and walk for 40 minutes, or you park in Cala Turqueta before 7:30 in the morning because it gets full which was my case to see Turqueta and then walk for an hour to get to this cove only to find it with a meter of decomposing algae. There is a path to Cala Macarelleta which is a sight, it’s a disgrace on whoever is responsible for the state of the coves in Menorca because there are plenty with the same issue.
Positive experience: Nice but overrated
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach and great water. A place worth visiting.
Fantastic experience: Very quiet cove, with a bar and restaurant, reachable also by a horse path in half an hour from Cala Galdana.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely magnificent, if there is a cove to recommend, it is this one! Be careful, there are a lot of people!
Positive experience: Beautiful but unfortunately with so many rocks, arrived on foot from Cala Galdana, half an hour walk, too bad about the seaweed.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach, crystal clear sea, it's a pity about the seaweed near the shore on the day we went. The beach is quite large so you will definitely find a spot. It is not equipped but there is a bar/restaurant. In summer, it can only be reached by bus (and seeing the road to get there, you understand why) with number 69 from Ciutadella in about 40 minutes. You continue on foot for about 30 minutes, through the pine forest, along a moderately difficult sloping path.
Negative experience: Parking at Cala Galdana, half an hour walk. Upon arrival, half a meter of seaweed (decomposing, smells, discomfort getting in... etc). We decided to go to Macarelleta and on the way back, the half meter of seaweed had turned into a meter. Very inadvisable for going with children in August 2024.
Fantastic experience: One of the most beautiful on the island, that water color is unforgettable. Recommendable route from Cala Galeana.
Positive experience: Caletta is reachable on foot in 20/25 minutes from the bus stop, as unless you arrive by 8, parking for rental and private cars is impossible. It is absolutely necessary to book the round-trip ticket for bus line 69, either at the departure stop or on the Torres website or directly on board. Going by bus is convenient due to the numerous schedules. The walk can be a bit tiring under the sun but is doable even in flip-flops, although it’s better with shoes. There are bars, restrooms, and showers (I recommend doing everything at Macarella and then going to Macarelleta where there is absolutely nothing). A very beautiful beach, especially from the boat as there can be a lot of seaweed on the shore depending on the current. Stunning colors from above.
Positive experience: Very beautiful cove!! The water is turquoise and magnificent. Unfortunately, there were a lot of seaweeds but it's certainly related to the season. The cove is surrounded by high cliffs, which makes the scenery truly magical.
Positive experience: It's fine but it has a lot of seaweed :_)
Fantastic experience: For me, the best cove in Menorca
Negative experience: A crowded beach full of seaweed, Menorca is a disappointment. They restrict parking entry, but allow boats and ships in without control, buses full of people. In the end, the beach is packed, and it's not worth going early either; it's better to go to other beaches in the north.
Fantastic experience: Nice, a little bit more quiet beach with a 30 minute walk from Cala Galdana. Walkable for kids as well. Still, be early. Some places have shadow during the day.
Fantastic experience: One of the most stunning coves I have ever been to, spectacular
Positive experience: Beautiful cove, but with difficult access and no showers.
Fantastic experience: Very beautiful
Negative experience: The dirtiest beach in all of Menorca
Positive experience: Attention for those who are going by car, access was blocked 7km upstream due to heavy traffic. By 9:30 am we had to turn back because they were regulating traffic and there were already many people on the way, at the same time it's THE beach that is referenced absolutely everywhere so I should have suspected that it was pointless to go there. If you really want to go there, I recommend coming by bus. I cannot give an opinion on the beach, but in my opinion, people must be on top of each other. Other Cales are well worth the detour.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach. Access is more or less easy. Equip yourself with suitable shoes, it makes hiking easier.
Fantastic experience: I loved the beach, warm water, transparent, ideal for diving.
Positive experience: I gave four stars because the cove, or rather the little coves (if you can manage to visit both) are quite overrated, the issue is the overcrowding which does not allow you to enjoy the right peace. Macarella is quite large, while Macarellata is more intimate. The path of about 2.2 km through the vegetation is not bad, indeed it is a nice route in close contact with nature, it's always worth it for those who love both discovering places and have the right curiosity.
Positive experience: Nice beach with a lot of people
Fantastic experience: Incredible cove
Negative experience: It's full of seaweed! Keep going to Macarelleta which is spotless!
Positive experience: Beautiful, but with tons of seaweed when entering the sea.
Positive experience: Beautiful beach but full of seaweed on the shore at the moment
Negative experience: The beach is very, very, very overrated. I have to say that with the storms this year it has been destroyed; there were so many seaweeds that it looked like oil, it smelled bad. Menorca has dozens of more beautiful coves than this one; it is an incredible island, don't just stick to the coves that are sold on the internet.
Fantastic experience: This beach is so beautiful and has a great bar near it for refreshment. We walked the ruta litoral from Son Saura, had some delicious food and drink in Cafeteria Susy and then returned via Cami de Cavalls.
Fantastic experience: Very beautiful cove!
Positive experience: A beautiful cove, one of the most beautiful I have seen in my life. During my stay in Menorca, I went twice, once by bus and the other walking from Cala Galdana. We walked from Cala Galdana to Macarella, Macarelleta, and Turqueta, each more beautiful than the last, and you may wonder why I only give it 3 stars. I give 5 stars for not allowing cars and that access to the beach is only on foot, but... what is the explanation for the coves being full of boats that do not allow you to enjoy the landscape and that, as vehicles, they pollute?
Fantastic experience: I recommend wearing appropriate footwear as it is mainly a rocky path at the beginning... it takes about 30 minutes to walk; there is a restaurant in the entire cove. You don't need an umbrella as there is plenty of shade from the trees. Highly recommended to go to Macarelleta by kayak and experience it.
Fantastic experience: Incredible cove, to get there you have to walk for a while. There are usually seaweeds on the shore. Moreover, there is a beach bar that serves decent food at a good price.
Positive experience: Overrated in my opinion: 1- in the summer months, ONLY ACCESS BY BUS 2- a little walk of about 20 minutes 3- small and touristy
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach.
Negative experience: When you see at the entrance of the road to get there that it's Full (there will be a large sign at the side of the road indicating which beaches are full or not), don't venture there, you will make a 15-minute drive on a narrow road for nothing, agents will tell you to turn back; however, it is accessible by bus only when the parking lot is full. It's a pity because we got there at 11:30, and it was already full. Try to go in the late afternoon.
Negative experience: Full of seaweed and sargassum. It is practically always in the shade. About a 30-minute walk from Cala Galdana to there.
Fantastic experience: It is definitely worth visiting this beach, but getting there is very exhausting. The road to the parking lot is very narrow. In some places, it is difficult to pass by another car. After reaching the parking lot, you still have to walk about 15-20 minutes.
Negative experience: A disappointment. Prolonged and rugged trail. Upon arriving at the beach and realizing that the water is filled with algae and the sand is also not very inviting was a terrible feeling. We were there for about 30 minutes and returned to Playa Galdana, which is indeed Paradise. I suggest booking a boat activity in advance to understand the state of these more popular beaches. If I had done that, I wouldn't have wasted a morning. Macarella doesn't even make the Top 5...
Fantastic experience: A beautiful place
Fantastic experience: Great beach, no need for drinks and water to be carried with you, since they have a bar nearby the beach with normal bathrooms and showers there.
Negative experience: We couldn't finally make it because the parking is practically nonexistent, as the two available are very small and fill up quickly, requiring an 8 km walk from there. The only way to get there apparently is by bus from Ciudadela, but we decided to leave it for another occasion.
Negative experience: The cove may be very beautiful, but this is the second time we’ve come and we turned back. Every page says that access is free until June 16, but when you arrive, some clever person from the Balearic government decides to close it on the 1st. Honestly, there are no facilities for visiting; the person in charge should rethink this. Making you go all the way to Ciutadella to buy a ticket… it’s a disaster!!!!
Positive experience: Beach with spectacular water, which receives many tourists in season. Quite busy but it is large and there is space. There is a restaurant and shade. By 10:00 there were already people.
Positive experience: In April. Cold and windy. Jellyfish in the water.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful dream beach! A small walk (25min) that goes up a bit. There is a café and a restaurant on site, as well as restrooms. Access to Macaralleta is superb.
Positive experience: Very beautiful beach! The beauty of the place is discovered and contemplated from the path that connects Cala Macarella to its little sister Cala Macarelleta at the top of the cliffs. A turquoise blue I have never seen before in the Mediterranean.
Fantastic experience: Not been here to swim or sunbathe on the beach but passed from cove to cove via the hiking trail El Cami de Cavalls. My favorite with its little neighbor. Extraordinary views. Strong and steep stairs between Cala Macarella and Cala Galdana.
Positive experience: The water is wonderful, the only downside is that there were a lot of dead seaweeds.
Fantastic experience: Amazing!!!
Positive experience: It is very, very beautiful, truly, but it is always very crowded.
Positive experience: The cove is beautiful, with good services, but getting there is complicated: 1 hour and 30 minutes from Mahon, the last kilometers along a narrow road that goes between stone walls, and after leaving the car in the parking lot, 15 minutes walking through a forest.
Positive experience: Nice beach that is a bit crowded, with the option to rent canoes, but during the May season, I guess there are fewer people. Due to the weather, the sea may be rougher and have seaweed. There is a beach bar that is quite good with many options for drinks, coffee, smoothies, food. And the service is excellent.
Fantastic experience: Superb beach in Menorca. From Cala Galdana, it takes about 30 minutes of walking. Make sure to wear good shoes. We arrived at 9:30 AM, and there were already a few people. Starting from 11:00 AM, it is quite crowded, especially on the beach. But the setting is still idyllic. There is a restaurant on-site with all the amenities. The only downside is that there are so many boats coming in that it slightly spoils the view.
Fantastic experience: If not the best, one of the best coves in Menorca. To get there, you need to drive on a road that becomes narrower until you reach areas where only one car can pass due to the small width of the road. From the parking lot, you have to walk about 20 minutes to reach the cove via a well-marked path that runs through the middle of a forest. At the cove, there is a restaurant where you can eat or have something to drink.
Fantastic experience: A beautiful turquoise water cove. It can be accessed from Cala Galdana via the Camí de Cavalls, a historic path in Menorca, framed by fantastic views between cliffs. Following the path, you arrive at Cala Macarelleta. My favorite little spots!
Positive experience: Impressive cove
Fantastic experience: A beautiful beach, accessed by a pleasant walk that is part of the horse trail. It's not a very big beach, but they have a long-standing restaurant; we went there during Holy Week and it was open.
Fantastic experience: Incredible, you can't miss it, a beautiful walk from Cala Galdana to Cala Mascarella.
Fantastic experience: the most beautiful bathing cove in Menorca -- but quite complicated to get to
Fantastic experience: Beautiful beach - however only accessible by bus and then on foot to preserve nature. Seaweed lies in the first 5 meters in the water, after that it gets better and there are no more seaweeds when swimming further from the beach. - all in all highly recommended and perfect for a nice day trip.
Positive experience: Beautiful space. Especially in winter without people.
Positive experience: Considerably smaller and, at the same time, dirtier (more polluted, with a lot of algae and leaves - September 2023) than, for example, the nearby Cala Galdana. In my opinion, it's not worth the 30-minute climb from Cala Galdana because you might be disappointed.
Fantastic experience: Spectacular cove. One of the best I've ever seen. I think it's better to go by boat (if you have one or rent it) since you can access areas where the water is clearer. In summer it gets quite crowded and if you go by car you may find that there is no parking space, so they won't even let you pass. It's crucial to check the weather and from where the wind blows (to avoid seaweed and jellyfish). If you're lucky enough to catch a good day, it's an incredible place.
Fantastic experience: Very beautiful beach - turquoise water, a real treat!
Negative experience: My biggest disappointment in Menorca! Way too many people and much nicer and quieter beaches elsewhere!
Fantastic experience: 20 minutes from the parking. A very beautiful beach with a bar and restaurant.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful cove with sand to spend a pleasant afternoon.
Fantastic experience: A magnificent cove. The best memories of Menorca are from this cove. Don’t miss a walk to Macarelleta - the views are amazing.
Fantastic experience: Magnificent
Negative experience: Overrated and full of seaweed, you have to go to Macarellereta. The sea is beautiful but it is full of people.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful
Positive experience: For whatever reason, it smells like sewage here, even though the sea water was clear. Great opportunity to lie in the shade as well. A tiring but very beautiful way to get there in the heat.
